Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup salted butter
  • 2 containers of Pillsbury biscuits
  • 1/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Gather all ingredients. I often have these stored in the trailer for easy camping meal prep.
  • Line the oven with parchment paper to make clean-up a breeze.
  • Place the cast iron pot over the fire to warm, then put butter inside to melt.
  • Mix sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a large freezer bag.
  • Cut or tear the biscuits into quarters and drop them into the bag a few at a time.
  • Shake to coat each one completely.
  • Place the biscuits in the Dutch oven and stir to coat them in butter. It’s okay if they overlap.
  • Place the lid on the Dutch oven and bake over the coals of a fire for about 40 minutes. Alternatively, you may bake this in the oven at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.
  • Serve with a drizzle of caramel sauce or frosting.

Notes

  1. Use parchment paper – Lining the Dutch oven with parchment paper makes cleanup so much easier, especially when camping.
  2. Rotate the oven – If cooking over an open fire, rotate the Dutch oven every 10-15 minutes to ensure even baking.
  3. Keep an eye on the heat – Too much direct heat on the bottom can burn the monkey bread. Placing a few coals on top of the lid helps with even cooking.
  4. Try different toppings – Drizzle caramel sauce, cream cheese frosting, or even a sprinkle of powdered sugar for extra sweetness.
  5. Make it ahead – Prep the coated biscuit pieces at home and store them in a sealed bag in the cooler. When ready, just toss them in the Dutch oven and bake.
