Ingredients

  • 2 21-ounce cans cherry pie filling
  • 1 15.25-ounce box chocolate cake mix
  • 3/4 cup 1 1/2 sticks butter, melted

Instructions

  • Line your Dutch oven with parchment paper.
  • Pour the can of cherry pie filling into the lined Dutch oven, spreading it out evenly.
  • Sprinkle the dry box of cake mix evenly over the cherry filling.
  • Press it down gently so it covers the fruit completely.
  • Melt butter and pour it evenly over the top of the cake mix. Try to cover all of the dry ingredients.
  • Place lid on the Dutch oven and set it over hot coals.
  • Bake for about 50 minutes, or until the top of the cake is set and the edges are bubbling.
  • Scoop out warm servings and top with whipped cream.

Notes

  • Want to turn this into a black forest cake-style cobbler? Sprinkle some chocolate chips over the cake batter before baking. Cherry fans will love the rich chocolate-cherry combo!
  • A chimney starter is perfect for heating coals evenly. Once your coals are ready, spread them beneath and on top of the Dutch oven for consistent cooking.
  • Swap out the cherry filling for homemade cherry pie filling, apple pie filling, or even a peach dump cake variation with boxes of yellow cake mix. Dutch oven cherry cobbler is just the beginning!
  • Use a light coating of cooking spray before lining your Dutch oven to prevent sticking and make cleanup even easier.
  • Cook this on the BBQ grill on high for 50 minutes if you don't have a fire with hot coals to use.
