How to Make This Skillet Nacho Recipe

Ingredients

  • Ground beef, cooked and prepared at home – Pre-cooking it at home with taco seasoning means you can skip handling raw meat at the campsite.
  • Bell peppers, diced – Add a pop of color and a little crunch.
  • White onion, diced – Brings big flavor and that classic nacho aroma.
  • Nacho chips – Choose thick chips so they don’t collapse under the weight of all that goodness.
  • Cheddar cheese, shredded – Melty, gooey, and absolutely non-negotiable for proper skillet nachos.
  • Sour cream – Cool, creamy, and perfect for balancing out all the bold, cheesy flavors.
  • Salsa – Go spicy or mild, depending on your family’s preference.

Instructions

1. Prepare the ground beef at home and cook with 1-2 tsp of taco seasoning. Allow the beef to cool before placing it into a large freezer bag for easy storage and packing.

    2. Layer nacho chips, beef, peppers, onion, and cheese in a cast iron skillet.

    3. Repeat layers if desired and cover skillet with foil.

    4. Cook over the campfire or grill for 15-20 minutes or until all of the cheese has melted.

    Tips for Cooking With Cast Iron

    • When cooking with cast iron, be sure to season the surface first.
    • Always use gloves or oven mitts while cooking, as the surface of the iron will be hot.
    • Cook the recipe over an open fire using hot coals, not open flames. A fire that is too hot will burn the outside of your recipe and not cook the inside.
    • Be sure to clean the cast iron with a rough vegetable scrubber, rinse, and dry thoroughly before storing.
