The biggest tip that we have whenever cooking over the campfire is to use the coals, not an open flame, and cook your recipe low and slow. Check out our How to Build a Campfire for Cooking post for more tips and tricks!

Supplies

We like to use a serving spoon with a wooden handle and stainless steel scoop. The handle protects from the heat of the dish and the spoon is sturdy for scraping the bottom of the Dutch oven.

Ingredients

  • Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls – Store-bought cinnamon buns make campfire baking a breeze, delivering fluffy dough, sweet cinnamon filling, and creamy frosting with zero prep.

Instructions

1. Line the Dutch oven with parchment paper. This step can be skipped, but it helps to make clean up way easier.

2. Open the container of cinnamon buns, set aside the frosting, and place the buns in a single layer on the bottom of the Dutch oven.

3. Place the lid on the Dutch oven and bake the cinnamon buns over the coals of a fire for about 25 minutes. Alternately you may bake them in the oven at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes.

Tips for Cooking With Cast Iron

  • When cooking with cast iron, be sure to season the surface first.
  • Always use gloves or oven mitts while cooking, as the surface of the iron will be hot.
  • Cook the recipe over an open fire using hot coals, not open flames.  A fire that is too hot will burn the outside of your recipe and not cook the inside.
  • Be sure to clean the cast iron with a rough vegetable scrubber, rinse, and dry thoroughly before storing.
