The key to creating this breakfast sandwich while backpacking is using the pot attachment on a jet boil and packing a small, lightweight frying pan.
This is our absolute favorite cooking system to use while backpacking and having the pot attachment makes it an all-in-one backpacking stove. We use it to fry bacon, scramble eggs, and cook sausage.

Backpacking Bagel Recipe
Ingredients
- Bagel – The sturdy base of this breakfast sandwich, bagels hold up well when backpacking. I (Heather) used this keto bagel recipe.
- Sliced cheese – Melts beautifully over the egg and sausage, adding a creamy, salty layer.
- Cooked sausage patty – Packed with protein and flavor, this fully cooked patty reheats quickly and keeps hungry hikers full for hours.
- Egg – Whether pre-cooked or cooked fresh on the trail, the egg adds richness.
Tip: We packed all of these ingredients fully cooked and frozen on our last backpacking trip. Then we prepared this recipe on the first morning.
Without refrigeration, the ingredients should be used first thing on your trip.

Instructions
1. Set up the jet boil with the pot attachment. Turn it on and heat the small skillet. Cut the bagel and toast both sides.

2. Prepare the egg. There are a few ways to do this — we packed the egg fully cooked and frozen, but you could also pack an uncooked egg in the shell to cook onsite.

Eggs can last for weeks and even months in the shell. We’ve seen other hikers pack in an entire carton of eggs to enjoy while camping.
Fresh eggs are one of the best ways to enjoy breakfast in the wilderness!
