Campfire Hobo Meatloaf
Ingredients
- 1 lb Lean ground beef, defrosted – The star of the show! You can also use ground turkey or mix in some ground pork for extra flavor.
- 1/4 Onion, diced – Adds just the right amount of zing and sweetness.
- 1/4 cup Croutons, crushed – Croutons are a great alternative to bread crumbs, because they are already packed with flavor.
- 1 cup Tomato pasta sauce – The key to a juicy, tangy, mouthwatering loaf.
- 1 Egg – Holds everything together, so your meatloaf doesn’t crumble in the foil.

Instructions
1. Once your ground beef is fully defrosted, add all of the ingredients to a large bowl or a Ziploc freezer bag.

2. Combine ground beef, onion, croutons, tomato sauce, and egg together thoroughly.

3. Shape the meat mixture into a loaf and place it onto a large sheet of aluminum foil.
4. Wrap it tightly, then double-wrap with another layer of heavy duty foil to create a sturdy packet.5. Place the packet onto campfire coals or a charcoal grill, avoiding direct flames. Cook for 40–60 minutes.

5. Carefully unwrap (watch out for steam!), top with extra tomato sauce or ketchup, and enjoy!

Tips and Tricks
- Prepare your meatloaf ingredients in advance to make meal prep at the campsite quick and mess-free.
- Add bell peppers or other fresh veggies for an extra burst of flavor and nutrition.
- Use olive oil or cooking spray inside the foil to prevent sticking.
- If you love a smoky flavor, cook the meatloaf near, but not directly on, the hot coals.
- Double-wrap with heavy duty foil so your packet doesn’t tear during the cooking process.
- Make your side dishes in separate foil packs for an entire meal and almost no cleanup.

How to Make a Tinfoil Packet
- Cut two pieces of aluminum foil large enough to cover the entire meal (about 12″). Layer them one on top of the other. Optional: spray the interior with nonstick spray or line with parchment paper.
- Place recipe ingredients in the center. Bring up the longer edges of the foil and fold together. Grasp one end and roll it up, repeating with the other end.
- Alternatively, foil pie plates may be used to cook foil packet meals. Simply place the recipe ingredients into the pie plate and cover with aluminum foil before cooking.
- For best results, cook the foil packet on a grill over the open fire.
- Use caution when handling the foil packet, as it can become hot while cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this meatloaf with ground turkey?
Absolutely! Ground turkey works great and makes a leaner option. However, you may want to add a little extra seasoning or a splash of olive oil to keep it moist.
How do I know when my meatloaf is fully cooked?
Check for an internal temperature of 160°F. If you don’t have a thermometer, slice it open—if it’s no longer pink inside, it’s ready!
Can I cook this in a Dutch oven instead?
Yes! Just place the wrapped meatloaf inside a Dutch oven, cover, and cook over the heat source for about 45 minutes.
How can I add extra flavor?
Try adding Worcestershire sauce, a sprinkle of brown sugar, or some fresh parsley to amp up the taste.
What’s the best way to serve this recipe?
Slice it up and serve your meatloaf with roasted sweet potatoes, green beans, a side of baby carrots, or a green salad for a delicious meal!
