My kids are like most and have mad love for pizza. In the past we’ve made pie iron pizza and this foil packet pizza bake.
But as the camping cook, I have to say that this dutch oven pizza is probably my favorite. Just because of how truly easy it is to make!
The biggest tip that I have whenever cooking over the campfire is to use the coals, not an open flame and cook your recipe low and slow. Check out my “How to Build a Campfire for Cooking” post for more tips and tricks!
Campfire Dutch Oven Pizza Recipe
Ingredients
- Non stick spray or parchment paper (optional)
- Pillsbury pizza crust
- Primo pizza sauce
- Pepperoni
- Mozzarella shredded cheese
Directions
- Open the pizza dough and press it into the bottom of the dutch oven. Tip: spray the interior of the oven with non stick spray or line with parchment paper to help prevent sticking. A well seasoned cast iron oven will not need this.
2. Spread pizza sauce on the dough.
3. Sprinkle generous amounts of Mozzarella cheese over the dough.
4. Top with pepperoni slices and cover with the dutch oven lid.
5. Cook over a low fire for 30-40 minutes or until the dough is baked and the cheese is melty. Tip: rotate the dutch oven often and move from open flame. Alternatively this can be baked in a trailer oven or over a BBQ grill.

Camping essentials for dutch oven recipes
- I love using this Lodge Cast Iron Skillet for all of my sauteing.
- These silicone tongs are perfect for flipping and grasping hot food.
- This 9QT Overmont Dutch Oven is my favorite for one pots style meals over the fire.
- These long handled wooden utensils make stirring easy and they don’t melt or get too hot!
- This cast iron scrubber set is perfect for safely cleaning your cast iron.
Of course, the pizza topping options are endless and you could totally add mushrooms, bell peppers, pineapple, ham or whatever else you wanted. I like to sprinkle a little dried oregano overtop.
Tips for cooking with cast iron
- When cooking with cast iron, be sure to season the surface first.
- Always use gloves or oven mitts while cooking as the surface of the iron will be hot.
- Cook the recipe over an open fire using hot coals, not open flames. A fire that is too hot will burn the outside of your recipe and not cook the inside.
- Be sure to clean the cast iron with a rough vegetable scrubber, rinse and dry thoroughly before storing.
